Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of CNT Nation member Tech to boldly go in Black History where no man has gone before... well not really but I digress. I am a fan of start trek and have seen all the movies and T.V. shows... well skipped around enterprise some but still a good show where we saw some African Americans take prominent roles in the Star Trek universe, such as Benjamni Sisco the commander of deep space 9 or as mentioned in an earlier post Chief engineer Geordi LaForge.
But there is a new Star Trek series in development; Star Trek Discover. A series that will debut on CBS Access and a series that will have the first African American lead female who although wont be the captain, she will be the first mate, number 1 and show will focus on her.
She will be played by none other than Sonequa Martin. Yea, the fine Sasha of the Walking Dead fame. Fear not Walking Dead fans, this does not mean that Sasha will meet her end on the show as they have said both will film at different times. You see is now Heath of the Walking Dead is on 24 Legazy now and he is...well we don't know if he dead or not as all we saw was his glasses. Anyway I can't wait to see Sonequa and her fine self g3o to where not black woman has gone before!
Thanks to roots, my namesake LeVardis (oooo, nice name) Robert Martyn "LeVar" Burton Jr. was born today February 15, 1957 to American parents U.S Army Signal Corps Levardis Robert Martyn Burton and social worker, administrator, and educator in Landsthul, Germany and his acting fame came from the T.V movie "Roots" that was based of the novel by Alex Haley that told the story of Kunta Kinte, played by LeVar Burton, an African captured and sold into slavery. Through out the move Kunta rebels always trying to find freedom, even after receiving the name Toby
LeVar went on to produce and star in one of the longest running children's programs, Reading Rainbow. A show that received over 200 broadcast awards; a Peabody Award and 26 Emmys. LeVar himself won 12 Emmys as host and producer. After the shows initial run LeVar and his business partner Mark Wolfe acquired the glboa rights to trhe brand and formed RRKIDZ; a new media company for children which includes the reading rainbow ipad app. To further the Reading Rainbow brand, in 2014 LeVar started a kicstarter to bring Reading Rainbow back as maybe a web series to keep up with the times. The kick started raised over 5 million dollars.
And we can't forget Star Trek: The Next Generation where LeVar played Lieutenant Geordi La Forge. The blind chief engineer was known for his visor that let him see; a visor that was imply a teeth comb spray painted gold... People called him the next generation's Spock. LeVar even directed two episodes The Next Generation and sevearl episodes of other Star Trek series like Deep Space Nine where there was a character named after him and episodes of Voyager and Enterprise.
Also, I want to thank LeVar Burton for the idea to capitalize the V in LeVar. Helps for those who want to pronounce it Leaver....
